What was covered

Bill Becker cut through the noise around AI and the workplace, and made the case that the people who get trained now are the ones who come out ahead. Here is the short version.

AI is coming for tasks, not jobs

The layoffs in the headlines are mostly not about AI. They are about Wall Street pressure, over-hiring, and offshoring, with AI used as a convenient explanation. What AI actually does is take over pieces of your job, the repetitive admin work, the first-draft work, the data pulling. That frees up hours you can spend on the parts of the job only a person can do.

Jobs evolve, they do not vanish

Some work does get displaced, and it always has, from self-checkout to warehouse robotics. But new roles keep appearing alongside it: people who verify what AI produces, translate its output into business decisions, and turn insights into strategy. Existing roles in HR, marketing, finance, and teaching are being reshaped rather than removed. As Bill put it, the H in HR still matters, because humans are the competitive advantage.

The skills gap is the real risk

Basic AI literacy is now a baseline expectation, not a specialty. Prompt writing in particular went from nice-to-have to essential, and it applies to every role in every industry. Bill’s advice to non-technical professionals was blunt: you need AI skills more than IT does, not less, because IT already adopts new tools by default.

Training has to be role-specific, and it has to prove itself

Generic “intro to AI” content does not change how anyone works. AICerts courses are built around a job role and teach how AI changes that role, backed by a proctored exam and a completion certificate so you can actually prove capability to leadership. There are around 80 courses today with roughly 150 expected by year end. Each course includes video, ebook, audio and podcast versions, a mobile app, an AI mentor, one year of access with quarterly updates, and two exam attempts. The courses are vendor-agnostic, and PMI recognizes them for PDUs.

Learning is continuous, not one and done

The biggest mistake Bill sees is treating AI training like a checkbox. The tools change monthly. Take the course, get certified, then keep looking outward at what other industries are doing and keep trying the free tiers of new tools.

Questions Bill answered

  • What is your biggest concern as a leader? You are squeezed from both directions: your team is anxious about their jobs, and your leadership wants results. The answer is governance, clear guardrails on what company data can go into a public tool, and proper training so people do not learn by trial and error.
  • Which industries will be most impacted in the next two years? All of them. Bill could not name a single industry that will not be touched to some degree.
  • I am not in IT. Do I really need AI skills? Yes, and arguably more than IT does. If you free up a few hours a week, you can finally put your institutional knowledge to work on better ways to operate, new revenue streams, and real cost savings.
  • What is the biggest mistake people make when upskilling? Assuming one course is enough. AI changes every day, so the learning has to keep going.
  • One AI skill every professional should learn? Writing good prompts. It does not matter what your job or industry is, a well-constructed prompt is the difference between a useless answer and an outstanding one.
